Why are My Hands so Dry During the Summer?

You moisturized your hands to get through the bitter winter weather,  you maintained such healthy skincare habits in anticipation of warmer weather!

Now here we are! Summer is in full effect. It's the most popular time of the year for showing off your skin! Did you know that even though hands dry out during winter, our hands are also susceptible to dryness during summer months as well?

Hands: Most Used Yet Most Overlooked in Skincare

You use your hands to do just about everything. You probably take your hands’ skin health for granted, especially during the summer. Without implementing the right skincare routine for your hands on a daily basis, your hands will fall victim to:

  • Brittle fingernails

  • Wrinkled hands

  • Cracked, painful hands

  • Excessively dry skin

What Causes Dry Hands in the Summer?

Dry hands are never anything you want as your focal point for your summer look. Even if you already have a healthy skincare routine, the summer sun takes its toll on your skin.

It’s important to know what causes dry hands and what you can do to avoid scaly, irritated skin this season.

Sunlight

You may be excited to get out and enjoy a little vitamin D, but too much unprotected exposure to UV rays can lead to dry skin. According to the American Cancer Society, too much sun exposure can lead to rough, dry, and wrinkled skin.

Pool Chlorine

Swimming is one of the best summer pastimes to beat the heat. However, your hours in the pool could lead to an aged look that your hands won’t wear well. The chemicals in chlorine are the kryptonite to your skin’s sebum oil that creates natural moisturization. Chlorine opens up your skin’s pores, removes these oils, and leads to dry skin, and even burns in some cases.

Air Conditioning

The whole point of air conditioning is to remove moisture from an environment in order to cool it down. While turning the AC down low can leave your body feeling cooler, it can do a number on your skin.

In general, air conditioning pulls moisture from your skin. If you continue to let your body dry out by the AC, your hands could eventually become itchy, flaky, and extremely irritated.

Excessive Hand Washing

We’re in an age where hand washing and sanitation have taken priority more than ever before. However, the chemicals found in common hand sanitizers and soaps dry out your skin and leave it further exposed to unwanted contaminants.

How to Maintain Soft Hands During the Summer

Fortunately, although it’s easy for the summer to dry out your hands, the skincare experts of TrūAura Beauty have several ways you can keep your hands smooth and silky during your fun in the sun.

Hand Exfoliation

You likely already exfoliate your skin and main parts of your body, but remember, your hands need some exfoliation TLC as well. Exfoliation with a body or hand scrub a few times a week can help shed off dead skin cells and keep your hands healthier and happier.

Get (and Use) Hand Cream!

Hand cream is an essential ingredient to anyone’s summer skincare routine. TrūAura’s Replenishing Hand Cream creates a natural skin barrier that hydrates and protects your skin from any irritants or environmental changes it’s exposed to.

Having a great hand cream on standby helps keep your skin moist and stress-free. We recommend stocking up on two or three bottles at a time, so you can have a supply of hand cream wherever you have a free moment to moisturize. Keep a bottle in your car and the two rooms in your home where you wash your hands the most: your bathroom and your kitchen.

Sun Protection

We’ve drilled in the point that the heat isn’t a great catalyst for healthy skin. Remember to avoid overexposure and to treat your hands with the same (sunscreen & sunblock) preventative care as your face and body.

Hydration

Dry and dehydrated skin isn’t the same thing, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the importance of keeping your skin hydrated during the summer. Whether you replenish your skin’s oils via gentle cleansing products or add some probiotics into the mix, we guarantee your hands will thank you for the love.

Get a Manicure

Regular fingernail clipping, cleaning and hand massage from a manicurist promotes blood circulation in your arms and hands. Plus, let’s face it, manicures make your hands look instantly younger. Any excuse to pamper ourselves!

When to See a Dermatologist

In rare cases, you may notice signs or symptoms on your hands during the summer that you hadn’t noticed before. Be on the lookout for moles or freckles that change color or shape. If you have worsening acne on your hands or very red, itching and scaly skin, it might be best to have a dermatologist evaluate your hands.
