Microbiome-Friendly Skincare for Winter Hydration

A Healthy Microbiome is Crucial for Healthy Skin, Especially During Winter Months

The Basics of Healthy Skin

Most of us don’t realize that a key contributor to maintaining healthy and balanced skin is the slightly acidic film that sits on the skin’s surface, known as the ‘acid mantle’. Anyone familiar with TrūAura will know that protecting this mantle, otherwise known as the microbiome, is the core of our brand’s mission and all of the products that we create. So, how do our products work so well in all seasons, especially during the dry winter months?

A Recap of Our Skin’s Ecosystem

Our skin’s microbiome is an ecosystem made up of water, electrolytes, fatty acids, minerals, sebum and even organisms, and when it is in balance, it provides protection from potentially harmful substances and elements in the outside environment, including viruses, microbes, chemicals, and UV radiation.

Balancing Your Microbiome Helps Reduce Flaky / Dry Patches

An imbalanced microbiome can actually lead to increased flakiness of the skin or dry patches. This is the start of a self-perpetuating cycle of further flaking, irritation, and dryness if the balance of the microbiome is not restored.

Gentle Cleansing is Better in Wintertime

Cleansing with water that’s too hot, and aggressively harsh cleansers can lead to excess stripping of the skin’s natural oils, which also results in an imbalanced microbiome. We recommend cleansing your face with lukewarm water (never hot) and using a gentle cleanser such as our Nourishing Cleanser immediately followed by a toner and moisturizer while your face is still damp from rinsing.

Exfoliation helps with Hydration

When you aren’t exfoliating regularly, the accumulation of dead skin cells can actually interfere with proper hydration. Using a product such as the Rejuvenating Microdermabrasion treatment can help allow for better absorption of your moisturizing and leave-on treatments.
